OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement to mark the 20th anniversary of the École Polytechnique tragedy in Montreal:
“Twenty years ago tomorrow, fourteen women lost their lives in a wanton act of violence that sent shock waves across Canada.
“Since 1991, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada reminds us of this tragedy and of the violence against women that persists to this day. Their suffering is our shame. We must act to protect all of our country’s citizens and keep them safe.
“Twenty years later, this sad event reminds us of the importance of gun control. I support a gun registry that includes all guns, and want to make it more effective and useful.
“In memory of the victims of this tragedy, please take a moment tomorrow to remember, so that we never forget what happened that day.”
